Endovenous Laser Ablation also commonly referred to as endovenous laser ablation of the saphenous vein (ELAS), is a treatment alternative to VNUS Closure® or surgical stripping of the greater saphenous veins. It is a minimally invasive, non-surgical option for treating saphenous vein reflux disease. Performed on an outpatient basis in the physician’s office under local anesthesia and ultrasound guidance, the physician places a catheter into your vein either at the knee or higher. A tiny laser fiber is then passed through the catheter and positioned at the top of your greater saphenous vein. The laser emits short bursts of energy that heat the vein wall. As the laser fiber and catheter are withdrawn, the entire length of the vein is closed. Following the procedure, a bandage is placed on the treated leg. Compression hose are worn for three weeks during the day only. The procedure takes less than an hour, there is minimal post-procedure discomfort, and you can resume your normal activities that day with very few restrictions. *Covered by most insurance providers.
